Christmas Hot Chocolate in a Jar

Without fail, every single year I get stuck on Christmas gift ideas for an impossible-to-buy-for relative, friend or teacher! Sometimes it’s because they’re super fussy and other times it’s because they just really don’t want or need anything! And it’s precisely at those times that I like to fall back on one of my favourite things… homemade gifts!

What I love most about homemade gifts is that they’re inexpensive, but the person really feels as though you’ve gone to a lot of time and effort to make something special for them. For years I would always make a batch of ‘Cookies In A Jar’ for our neighbours, friends and work colleagues, and then a couple of years ago I discovered ‘Hot Chocolate In A Jar’ and fell in love!

These are so simple to make and are just the most gorgeous Christmas gift. They’re super cheap, which is fantastic if you have lots of people on your Christmas gift list. They also make the perfect gift for your child’s teacher. You can either give them away on their own or pop them into a little hamper with a range of other homemade goodies.

To make a single serve of ‘Hot Chocolate In A Jar’ you will need the following:

• 1 small mason jar (or old jam jar) – about 225g capacity
• ½ cup cocoa powder
• ¼ cup caster sugar
• 2 tbs chocolate chips
• Between ¼ – ½ cup marshmallows depending on the size of your jar)

To assemble the jar, simply:

1. Layer the cocoa, sugar and chocolate chips into the mason jar.
2. Fill to the top with marshmallows (so that the mixture is firm and doesn’t move around).
3. Screw on the lid tightly and tie with a Christmas ribbon.

Next you need to hand write the following instruction label: To serve, remove the marshmallows and set aside. Stir the cocoa, sugar and chocolate chips together in the jar. Take 3 tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix and place them into a mug. Mix together with one cup of warmed milk. Serve with the reserved marshmallows.

To make multiple jars, simply increase the amount of ingredients accordingly. I love how simple these are… and you know that they’ll be loved everyone (really, who doesn’t love a yummy hot chocolate!).
